As you might expect, a good deal of your domestic work can come from client recommendations. Your training will get you up to speed technically, but you'll also need good people skills when dealing with the public.

Commercially employed electricians will usually work a 37 - 40 hour week, with possible overtime at the weekends. Salaries generally come in around the 26,000 mark, though it's higher than that in some areas. However, self-employed electrical workers operating in the domestic market can expect to earn more, but may well have to offer more flexibility in their working hours. Of course, anyone running their own business has to cover their costs as well, though these shouldn't be too extensive.

Choosing The Ideal Training Path For You

The main recognised trade certification bodies in the UK are City & Guilds and EAL. Students training in their teens usually add work experience and NVQs to their C&G exams. Overall this extends training to 36 to 48 months. Mature entrants generally study courses in their own time on a partly distance-learning basis. They don't need lengthy NVQ training because they're looking to work in private houses.

Career-changers want the best value for their money, and greater flexibility. This reduces the overall qualification set, but it meets the trade requirements for the areas involved, and so provides a quicker and more direct route to the market.

What Might This Training Cover?

Probably a good place to start would be on a course that prepares you for your EAL level 2 Domestic Electrical Installer. Teaching will comprise of all the wiring fundamentals and safety practices.

As certain qualifications are now a legal requirement, you'll be coached in the essentials to pass Part P - the title now given to relatively new regulations for domestic electrical work.

The 17th edition IEE wiring regulations is another requirement for electrical workers. You could also be taught and assessed to carry out various other tasks that together will allow you to complete and self-certify domestic electrical work.
