All businesses need to Project Manage their procedures. Work in this sector can be very interesting and fulfilling, as you will discover if you explore the training routes available to enter the industry. People who are well organised and have good spatial logic can make very competent project managers. The ability to communicate well with others is a plus point as well, because much of the success of a project depends on everyone pulling together.

...On Time, On Budget

Modern businesses are always looking to improve the quality, efficiency and delivery of their goods and services. All stages of a business or production process need to be professionally controlled and optimised, hence the need for Project Management. Learning how to use scarce resources efficiently in a commercial context will allow you to get into this valuable sector.

You'll find a range of commercial colleges that provide Project Management training. All project management training will cover certain fundamentals, but the more advanced the course, the more you will get into the complexities of planning and controlling large scale operations.

Language

There's a certain amount of industry jargon to understand with project management. As well as learning about basic PM tools and techniques, it's essential to be familiar with common terms and the current ways of thinking. There are a number of schools of thought in project management but you will discover many processes have a lot in common.

As Old As The Pyramids

We might think of Project Management as a fairly recent discipline, but actually it has a long and interesting history. It could be said to go as far back as Vitruvius (thought by some to be the world's first known engineer) in the first century BC. F W Taylor was an American mechanical engineer who published 'The Principles of Scientific Management' in 1911.

As an efficiency and management expert, he influenced other people's work, such as Henri Fayol's 'Fayolism' and Henry Gantt's 'Gant Chart'. The Gantt Chart was considered to be revolutionary when it was first introduced. Essentially a type of bar chart, it illustrates a project schedule which can show the start and finish dates of every element of a project and even the dependency relationships between activities.

Fast Forward To Recent Times

You could begin the story of modern planning project management in America in the 1950's, but of course it hadn't yet really got into the human attributes of motivation and leadership. New methods had to be developed to deal with the complexities of building the Polaris Missile submarine programme. The solution came in the form of a new network chart known as PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique). This mathematical model can still be used as a basis to find a critical path through various planned and interconnected tasks. Now known as AACE International, the American Association of Cost Engineers was formed by early practitioners in 1956.

International Project Management Association

In the late 1960's the International Project Management Association (IPMA) was founded. It brought together several PM associations from various different countries and now has members throughout the world. The IMPA four-level certification programme is assessed on three competence ranges - behavioural, technical and contextual.

PMI

America followed in '69 with their non-profit professional organisation, the Project Management Institute (PMI). The 'Project Management Body of Knowledge' from PMI is now an internationally recognised standard in the industry. This process-based guide deals with just about all information and practices in project management. Any student of project management should understand the processes and terminology that are featured in this guide. Learning programs can be accessed which teach the elements of the guide in great detail. These prepare students for the most widely recognised Project Management certifications across the globe, the prestigious PMP and CAPM qualifications. Employment experience alongside your studies is required.

PRojects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2)

PRINCE was introduced in the UK in 1989 as a government standard for IT project management. PRINCE2 is now aimed at all other types of projects as well. PRINCE2 2009 describes forty different activities that can be organised into seven processes. Training programs will provide students with the ability to organise, plan and control projects using the PRINCE2 method. PRINCE2 can be used as an invaluable diagnostic tool for project work, audits and troubleshooting. It's a checklist for success.

There are a variety of other qualifications and training levels, such as the entry level APM UK Introductory Certificate in Project Management. If this will be your first project management training, then make sure you choose one that's recognised commercially. A career in Project Management takes study and work - but it could prove the most satisfying thing you do.
